On Saturday, I had to say goodbye to a dear friend.
Dapples, my miniature pony who we've had for 13 years
She was crippled from foundering twice when she was younger and her old lungs just weren't what they used to be. Strange how hard it can be to put down an horse. I mean, it's not like losing a sibling or parent, of course, animals can never replace people, but hard all the same.
With her blind daughter, Dani, who is still recovering from losing her mom and companion of 13 years.
My best friend and I, when we were small, would ride the two of them all over our farm, sometimes both of us riding both of them at the same time. It was "Indians and Cowboys" time- with forts and handmade corrals and fashioning rope halters and bridles because it was cooler that way.
When we bought the two ponies, Dani was only 4 months old, just a tiny little thing, and my Dad crawled up to her and she bit his nose. Hard. She still is a bit feisty.
Dapples was hardly less so- on the same day, Dad decided he could ride her (his feet literally dragged on the ground) and she took off, throwing him to the ground.
Here is me with the two of them probably 9 or 10 years ago.
